SUMMARY:Minnesota Unearthed
DESCRIPTION:Dig into Minnesota geology and celebrate ancient history through Indigenous perspectives! Throw an atlatl\, learn how to make a canoe\, and get to know local rocks as you chat with experts from the Minnesota Historical Society’s Jeffers Petroglyphs site and the Minnesota Geological Survey. Expect to leave with a strong foundation of Indigenous history and a head full of rocks – er\, rock knowledge! \n\n\n\nThe Whitney and Elizabeth MacMillan Planetarium will have special showings of Living in Balance: Anishinaabe Star Knowledge\, which highlights Anishinaabe stories of constellations and moons in relation to contemporary insights about environmental changes. Produced by Abrams Planetarium and Dr. Beth LaPensée; translated into the Western dialect of Anishinaabemowin by Winonah Ojanen (Aanakwadikwe) and Dennis Jones\, narrated by Dennis Jones. * \n\n\n\nShowtimes: 10:30 am & 1:30 pm

SUMMARY:Solar Observing
DESCRIPTION:We’re taking advantage of the sunny summer weather and bringing our solar telescopes out each week this summer! Our expert staff will guide you through safe solar observing while teaching you about our closest star. Please note: solar observing will be canceled in case of clouds or rain. \n\n\n\nSolar safety \n\n\n\n\nOur telescope equipment utilizes safe Sun viewing methods; filtering the sunlight and projecting the sunlight.\n\n\n\nSolar filters include white light filters that block 99.999 percent of incoming sunlight\, safely allowing us to see any sunspots that might be visible.\n\n\n\nH-alpha SolarMax II telescope filters out all the colors of sunlight except a specific red light (656nm) to allow us to see features such as solar prominences along the edge of the Sun.\n\n\n\nSunspotters use a different method to safely view the Sun. They utilize mirrors and lenses to project the Sun safely onto a screen (piece of paper). You can draw/trace your own Sun and sunspots to start your own solar data log.\n\n\n\n\nFind additional solar observing dates at the Bell Museum \n\n\n\nSolar observing \n\n\n\nSolar Observing is an in-person event at the Bell Museum and is included in the cost of regular admission.
