The American Swedish Institute is a place for students to explore, learn, and grow. A field trip to ASI is a fun, immersive educational experience that includes a museum tour and hands-on arts and cultural activities.


School is just around the corner, which means it’s nearly field trip season. The American Swedish Institute (ASI) is an excellent place for students to explore, learn, and grow. ASI welcomes K–12 school and home-school groups to explore migration, identity, belonging, and the environment through educational museum tours and hands-on arts and cultural activities.

ASI’s educators work with classroom leaders to customize each experience. Build your experience by choosing one or more activities:

Guided Mansion Tours
Explore the Turnblad Mansion or the current exhibition. Lovingly dubbed the “Castle,” the Turnblad Mansion is unique, massive, and full of history. Each of the 33 rooms has a distinct style and décor that will inspire students to imagine what life must have been like over 100 years ago. Guided Mansion tours are designed for any grade level. Price: $10 per student.

Upcoming exhibitions the 2025-26 school year:

  • Salad Hilowle: Inscriptions – An inspiring collection of moving image, sound, and sculpture by internationally acclaimed Swedish artist Salad Hilowle. Jun 21-Oct 26, 2025.
  • Tomte Tales: Legends of Winter – ASI’s 75th annual holiday experience takes visitors on a journey through the fantastical with Tomte and all his friends. Nov 8-Jan 25, 2026
  • Handwoven: Between Chaos and Order + Nordic Echoes: Tradition in Contemporary Art. Handwoven will highlight the work of Emelie Röndahl, a textile artist from Sweden. Nordic Echoes is traveling exhibition of contemporary Nordic folk arts and cultural traditions from the Upper Midwest. Feb 14-Jun 7, 2026

Handcraft
Discover slöjd and walk away with a finished project of one of the following: Needle felted pictures or ornament, painted Dala horses, or paper quilled ornaments or cards. Designed for any grade level. Price: $20 per student.

Artifact Analysis
Students will learn about Swedish immigration or Swedish celebrations throughout the year through and exploration of educational artifacts. Designed for 3rd grade and older. Price: $15 per student.

Additional Information
ASI accommodates field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 am and 2 pm and can host 25 students per activity, for a maximum of 75 students per field trip. Combined activity pricing:

· Tour + Artifact Analysis: $20 per student
· Artifact Analysis + Handcraft: $30 per student
· Tour + Handcraft: $30
· Tour + Artifact Analysis + Handcraft: $35 per student
· Additional Adults: $15 per adult
